The only things I usually carry in my purse are my keys and my wallet (which contains cash, ID/driver's license, debit card and cards for grocery stores I go to).
I don't carry a purse, I usually just keep everything in a small backpack. Everything which includes, hair scrunchies, lip gloss/chapstick, phone, camera and usually a bottle of water. Oh and insect repellent wipes and sunscreen, I'm outside a lot.
My Grandfather has named my sister's handbag her "pantechnicon". This is because she has pretty much everything that may be useful. It's too much stuff to list here, but through practice she seems to have something for almost every occasion. I honestly think she's a wannabe Mary Poppins.
Personally, I don't think you should need that much stuff. I usually follow the "wallet, keys, phone" ritual before leaving the house, and that's generally all I need. Maybe women need a couple more items, but nothing major.
I also used to carry a notepad and paper with me most of the time, too.

But there's usually also a few reciepts in there. Sometimes my phone. But it's usually in my back pocket.
